Yara Birkeland is an all-electric shipping vessel that’s being focused on fully-autonomous cruising. It will frequently follow a single course so it will be simpler to predict possible problems that a self-supporting ship might come across, providing the project a better possibility of succeeding in comparison to much more complicated trips.
The Yara Birkeland can support 100 shipping containers each trip, which it may move at a pace of 12 to 15 knots. The built in battery holds enough charge to offer a range of about 65 nautical miles, which is ample enough for the fairly short quest it must take from the manufacturing facility to the global docks. Although made for autonomous operation, the vessel will have a captain in the course of its first few tours at the end of 2018. After a time, they will move to remote operation before ultimately placing the ship to ply the open seas alone. The group hopes for the autonomous process to start by 2020.
