What’s better than a beachfront hotel for vacation? Simple, an underwater hotel because, well, seriously how cool would it be to wake up surrounded by undersea wildlife? It has become a growing business for clever designers to create underwater accommodations, so much so that we can even start creating a top 10 of underwater hotels.
1. Lovers Deep San Lucia
This underwater love nest is a little unique compared to others in that it is actually a submarine rather than a stationary hotel. The space is shared with a captain, a butler and a chef, but they are situated all the way at the front of the sub and you are separated by a soundproof wall. It is the ideal couple’s passion getaway, but it will sure cost you with a $150,000 price tag.
2. Shimoa Wonderland Intercontinental China
This hotel is still under construction but the hype and rumblings about the place are huge. Located at the base of Tianmenshan Mountain, 30 miles outside Shanghai, the hotel is being built in an abandoned quarry. This building is set to be 19 stories high, the lower two levels of which will be underwater making this an intriguing prospect.
3. Jules Undersea Lodge, Key Largo, Florida
This former marine laboratory has been completely renovated into a very awesome hotel. You get the full marine experience due to the fact that you must dive down 20 feet to even access the accommodation. As a result, if you are not already a certified diver you will be given a 3-hour crash course so you can get to your sleeping quarters.
4. Manta Resort Underwater Hotel Room Tanzania
The Manta Resort Underwater Hotel room is the perfect basic accommodation below the waves. This location is anchored just off the Tanzanian coast and consists of a lounge and bathroom located on a platform above sea level as well as sleeping quarters beneath the waves.
5. Atlantis the Palm, Dubai
This hotel offers 2 underwater suites which offer stunning views of the Ambassador’s Lagoon. An oceanic world with realistic looking ruins and 65,000 sea dwelling inhabitants make this a unique experience. The in house butler and sheer luxury standards at the hotel itself just make the visit breathtaking.
6. Conrad Maldives, Rangali Island
All right, now this hotel doesn’t actually offer rooms below the surface of the water, but it does have a stunning feature which may make it worthwhile. The hotel’s restaurant, the Ithaa, is located in a long, sub-oceanic tube 16 feet below the surface. Touted as the world’s first all glass restaurant, you can dine in luxury surrounded on all sides by the ocean.
7. Ocean Suites, Sentosa Resorts World, Singapore
This hotel is kind of a cross between the Atlantis and the Manta in that the underwater hotel suites stretch from above to below the surface. Eleven of the hotel’s suites are underwater and each features an upper level with a Jacuzzi and patio area. Below the waves is the underwater bedroom with viewing windows which have automated panels. When you raise the panels the lights dim to allow you a better view of the surrounding marine life.
8. Water Discus Hotel
This is another hotel which technically doesn’t exist yet but the concept is awesome. Basically a company is creating these two-story mobile home style underwater dwellings which in theory can be sunk into any suitable body of water in the world. This two disc layout is designed for one disc to be below the water while the other remains above the waves. It creates a small complex of 21 rooms which would be absolutely awesome. Sadly, problems are arising with the design and implementation of these structures but work is ongoing.
9. Utter Inn, Sweden
Those looking for a more economical option for underwater accommodation will find the Utter Inn about as budget conscious as you can get. It costs just $75 a night to stay here, but in truth you need to have modest expectations. On the surface this looks like an ice-fishing hut in the middle of Lake Malaran, but this shack is the first of two rooms in this hotel suite. Below the surface, 10 feet below in fact, is the sparse two-sleeper bedroom. This lodging is very, very basic but is you are just trying to get away from things completely it could be a wonderful little adventure.
10. Hydropolis, Dubai
This hotel is currently under construction but has the potential to be one of the most unique underwater hotels in the world. It will be the only fully functional hotel that is completely submerged under water. The plan of this hotel is also kinda weird, they describe it as a kind of layout where the different elements of the structure represent different organs of the human body. Weird right? Expect this hotel to be one of the biggest as plans also call for it to be as big as London’s Hyde Park, which is humungous. All in all this hotel is definitely one of the top and being situated in Dubai you know its going to be spectacular.
